ALLAN MARKS MERCHANT NAVY DAY
SNP MSP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Alasdair Allan has marked Merchant Navy Day, which takes place on 3rd September.
3rd September is chosen as it also marks the anniversary of the sinking of merchant vessel SS Athenia which was torpedoed just a few hours after war was declared on Germany in 1939. The sinking resulted in the loss of 128 passengers and crew.
Commenting on the contribution of the Merchant Navy Alasdair Allan MSP said:
“Merchant seamen play an incredibly important role to our way of life. Communities in the Western Isles have a deep connection with the sea and all of us rely on merchant seamen to provide us with enough food to eat and transport the goods and services we all require.
“The contribution of merchant seamen during times of war has been particularly notable and it is a sobering thought to remember that many in this country may well have starved were it not for the heavy sacrifices of the merchant navy. It is good to see that in recent years there has been an increasing awareness and commemoration of these efforts.
“Islanders continue to have a deep appreciation and gratitude for the work on merchant seamen. We should all be aware of the hard work aboard ships that is required everyday to support the economy of our island communities. “
