ALLAN SEEKS HUMAN RIGHTS EXPLANATION FROM UK GOVERNMENT

Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, has today written to the new Secretary of State for Scotland, David Mundell MP, asking him to explain his Government’s ‘intentions towards human rights.’

This move follows the statement by the UK Government that they intend to repeal the Human Rights Act.

Alasdair Allan commented:

“The new UK Government appears to be heading in a very alarming direction on the issue of the protection of these basic rights that we have come to enjoy. In my letter to the Secretary of State I point out that these include, as well as the rights not to be discriminated against on the grounds of race or gender, the important rights of freedom of worship.

“It baffles me why the UK Government seems intent on diminishing existing human rights rather than enhancing them. Mr Mundell as Scottish Secretary will be aware that he is his party’s only MP in Scotland. What mandate he could possibly claim for such potentially far reaching changes to Scottish law is hard to see.”
